Why We Don't Always Start With Retinoids

Why We Don't Always Start With Retinoids

on

To understand why we don't automatically start every acne client on a retinoid, it helps to understand what is happening inside the pore.

Many people assume acne is simply an oil problem.

While excess oil can contribute to breakouts, it is only one piece of the puzzle.

Research has shown that acne-prone individuals often produce and retain dead skin cells differently than those who do not struggle with acne. These excess skin cells can accumulate within the follicle and create a blockage. Once that blockage forms, oil becomes trapped inside the pore and creates an environment where inflammation and acne-causing bacteria can thrive.

This is why many acne treatments focus on keeping the follicle clear and preventing congestion from developing in the first place.

In Clean Slate Acne Treatment Program we often find that strategic exfoliation is one of the most important components of an acne treatment plan.

When performed appropriately, exfoliation helps remove excess dead skin cell buildup, supports healthy pore function and can reduce the formation of new congestion.

This is one of the reasons the Face Reality Acne Method places such a strong emphasis on customized exfoliation protocols rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all approach.

Why Barrier Health Matters

Another factor we consider is the overall health of the skin barrier.

Many acne clients arrive with skin that is already compromised from years of trying different products, treatments, and online recommendations.

Common signs of barrier impairment include:

  • Persistent redness
  • Sensitivity
  • Stinging or burning
  • Reactive skin
  • Dryness and flaking
  • Chronic inflammation

When the skin barrier is compromised, the skin becomes less resilient and often struggles to tolerate corrective treatments.

Before aggressively correcting acne, we first want to ensure the skin is functioning properly.

A healthy skin barrier creates an environment where professional treatments and active ingredients can perform more effectively while minimizing unnecessary irritation.

Where Retinoids Fit Into The Picture

Retinoids such as tretinoin have earned their place in dermatology and acne treatment for a reason. They can be highly effective for many individuals and are supported by decades of clinical research.

However, effectiveness does not automatically mean they are the best starting point for every person.

For clients experiencing significant inflammation, irritation, sensitivity or barrier dysfunction, introducing a strong retinoid immediately may create additional discomfort before the skin has developed the resilience to tolerate it.

This does not mean retinoids are bad.

It simply means that timing matters.

In many cases, we prefer to first reduce inflammation, improve barrier function and establish healthy skin habits before introducing stronger corrective ingredients.

Once the skin is healthier and acne is more controlled, retinoids can become an excellent maintenance tool and may help support long-term skin health.

The Face Reality Philosophy

The Face Reality Acne Method is built around achieving results while minimizing unnecessary irritation.

Rather than asking, "What is the strongest product we can use?"

We ask:

"What does this skin need right now?"

For some clients, that may mean professional exfoliation.

For others, it may mean barrier repair, hydration support, lifestyle modifications, or corrective treatments

The goal is always the same: clear skin through a customized approach that supports the skin rather than overwhelms it.
