SPF in Your Makeup Isn't Always Enough

SPF in Your Makeup Isn't Always Enough

on

One of the most common things I hear during facial consultations is:

"I don't wear sunscreen but my makeup has SPF."

It's a common misconception and while makeup with SPF isn't a bad thing, it's important to understand what that SPF number actually means.

SPF Is Based on How Much Product You Apply

Every sunscreen is tested using a specific amount of product.

If you apply less than that amount, you won't receive the SPF protection listed on the label.

This doesn't just apply to sunscreen, it applies to makeup with SPF, too.

Think about how you normally apply foundation.

Most people use one or two pumps, a few drops, or a light layer to create a natural finish. To actually achieve the SPF printed on the bottle, you'd need to apply significantly more product than most people would ever wear.

That means if your foundation says SPF 30 but you're only applying a thin layer, you aren't receiving SPF 30 protection.

The SPF becomes more of a bonus than your primary source of sun protection.

What About Makeup Labels?

Over the years, regulations around sunscreen claims have continued to evolve.

In Canada, changes to sunscreen regulations required many cosmetic companies to reassess how they marketed SPF claims. Some makeup products could no longer prominently market themselves as sunscreen because consumers weren't realistically applying enough product to achieve the advertised protection.

The takeaway isn't that SPF in makeup is useless, it's that relying on makeup alone often creates a false sense of security.

The Best Way to Wear SPF

Instead of replacing sunscreen with makeup, think of your routine like this:

  1. Apply a dedicated broad-spectrum sunscreen as your skincare step.
  2. Allow it to set.
  3. Apply your makeup over top.

Now your makeup's SPF becomes an added layer of protection rather than the only layer.

Why We Recommend Colorescience

At K.R. Mallak Salon & Spa, Colorescience has become one of our favorite SPF lines because it was designed to make daily sun protection easy. They have protection in regular sunscreens AND makeup formulations.

We love that their products offer:

  • Broad Spectrum SPF protection against UVA and UVB rays
  • PA++++, the highest available UVA protection rating
  • 100% mineral active ingredients using zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide
  • Water and sweat resistance for everyday wear
  • Elegant, wearable formulas that patients actually enjoy using consistently

When sunscreen feels good on your skin, you're much more likely to wear it every single day and that's what makes the biggest difference in protecting your skin and maintaining healthy, long-term results.

The Bottom Line

If your makeup contains SPF, that's a great bonus.

But don't let it replace your daily sunscreen.

A dedicated sunscreen applied in the proper amount will provide the protection your skin deserves, while your makeup simply adds another layer of defense.

Healthy skin isn't just about treating damage, it's about preventing it.

If you're ready to upgrade your daily SPF, we'd love to help. Schedule a Product Pickup Appointment at K.R. Mallak Salon & Spa and we'll match you with the right Colorescience sunscreen for your skin type, lifestyle and goals. Whether you're looking for an everyday SPF, a tinted option or an easy way to reapply throughout the day, we'll help you build a routine that protects your skin and that you'll actually enjoy wearing every day.
